‘A blessing in disguise’ – fan reaction mixed over Chelsea’s second place group stage finish

Loading...

Chelsea fans have responded to their team’s failure to secure the top spot in Group C with both mild rage and hopeful reflection.

After Roma beat Qarabag at home in their final match of the Champions League group phase, the Blues had to beat Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge to stay in first place.

Yet they could only draw and due to their inferior head-to-head record with the Italians they slumped to second place, and are now at the mercy of a draw for the knockout stages that could pit them against Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain.

Had they finished as group winners then Chelsea would have enjoyed an easier draw for the round of 16, at least in theory. Bayern Munich finished second to PSG and would have been a potential hazard for the Blues had Antonio Conte managed to delivery the top spot.

Perhaps this is why some supporters are looking on the bright side in contrast to the doom and gloom from those who were disappointed to come second.

A full range of emotions and reactions could be found on Twitter.

Chelsea finish second in their Champions League group on head to head. A reminder they were 2-0 up against Roma at Stamford Bridge drew 3-3. That's what cost them top spot, not tonight's result. #CFC

The amount of missed opportunities we’ve had this match is easily more frustrating than stubbing your toe when you’re half asleep #Chelsea #CFC #chelseaFC #UCL #CHEATL

The amount of chances Chelsea are missing is terrible. As things stand Roma are topping the group and we gonna get a tough competitor in next round.

Absolutely hammered Athletico tonight. Just do not have that ruthlessness in front of goal. If this was Man City they would have 4 or 5. And you know we'll draw PSG come Monday! #CHEATL #Chelsea #ChampionsLeague

Roma may well be the most under-looked side in Europe right now. Recent departures from Rüdiger, Salah & Paredes, yet they've still topped their UCL group above Chelsea & Atletico.

Lots of chelsea fans complaining about being second. But you know PSG and Barcelona fans were rooting for Roma to get second so they wouldn’t have to face us. Let’s not act like CFC is not feared as well

Best thing for Chelsea is to come second in the group. Atleast we can get Besiktas.

I am witnessing right now that the most of Chelsea fans want Besiktas in the draw. It is okay. Bring them in. They will be welcomed here with all our hospitable environment. (😈)

Chelsea’s next game in the Premier League will be away to West Ham at the London Stadium, and with Conte still determined to defend the title he won in his first season as manager last term the champions will be doing all that they can to get back to winning ways at the weekend.

The draw for the Champions League round of 16 will take place on Monday.
