Andreas Christensen sends message to Chelsea fans after ousting David Luiz from the first team

With David Luiz suffering with injury over the past month, Andreas Christensen has been the major beneficiary as he’s started in the middle of a back three in each of the last four successive Premier League games.

In this period the Blues’ defence has been breached just once – in the draw with Liverpool last weekend – and the 21-year-old has rarely put a foot wrong when thrown into games such as the one at Anfield as well as the 1-0 win over Manchester United last month.

Furthermore, he beginning to show signs of the form he produced during a two-year loan spell in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach and Christensen has explained how that experience has helped his progression.

“I’m happy with the way I’m performing and the team are performing,” he told the club’s official website.

“We’re getting the points that are necessary and I’m enjoying playing my football.

“For me the loan was perfect timing. I got a lot of experience and played in the Champions League for two seasons.

“The Bundesliga is a high level and that was what I needed to help me come back.”

Comfortable with playing out from the back, Christensen uses the ball as well as anyone in English football’s top flight and didn’t misplace a single pass during the 1-0 win over Swansea City on Wednesday night.

Next up for the defender and Chelsea is the visit of Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge tomorrow afternoon as Antonio Conte’s side aim to close the gap to league leaders Manchester City – albeit for 24 hours – unless London rivals West Ham United can spring a surprise at the Etihad Stadium.
