Antonio Conte told Chelsea should sell 30-year-old to Man United

Ray Wilkins believes Chelsea should jump at the chance to offload David Luiz to Manchester United.

The Brazilian defender rejoined the Blues from Paris Saint Germain in a £32m deadline day move in 2016 after leaving Chelsea for the French giants for £50m in 2014.

His second stint at Stamford Bridge brought instant success as his displays were pivotal in clinching the Premier League title last season.

The popular South American has still not convinced the club’s former assistant manager Wilkins though, especially in the centre of defence.

Wilkins told SportingBet:

“As far as I’m concerned, David Luiz can go to United tomorrow as a centre-half.”

Luiz was often criticised for his error-strewn performance’s during his first stint at Chelsea.

His displays as a holding midfielder though, have earned glowing reviews, as his skills on the ball and passing were clearly evident.

This season has been stop-start for Luiz as Conte continues to chop and change the Brazilian’s role, and he has often started games from the bench.

But Wilkins wants Conte to play Luiz in the heart of the team, rather than in the centre of defence, where he feels he is not reliable enough.

“If he goes as a holding midfielder, I wouldn’t let him leave,” Wilkins added.

“David Luiz, as a centre-half, does not fit the requirements of a top level football club – he makes far too many errors.”

Conte has used Luiz in midfield, but primarily uses the Brazilian in defence. Luiz has been suspended recently, and his understudy, Andreas Christiansen, has taken his chance to shine superbly.

The Dane has been in superb form and Luiz could face less playing time that could hasten a second departure from Stamford Bridge.
