Chelsea news: Emenalo discusses Conte’s reaction to Man Utd signing Lukaku

MICHAEL EMENALO has hinted Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was disappointed to have missed out on signing Romelu Lukaku last summer.

The Italian had made the then Everton hitman his priority target in the transfer window and the Blues were confident of bringing him in to fill Diego Costa’s boots.

However, Manchester United came in with a late bid to pip Chelsea to the Belgian’s signature.

Reports in the summer suggested Antonio Conte was frustrated at Chelsea’s slow start in the transfer window with a lack of activity seeing them miss out on several key targets.

Chelsea eventually signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid to lead their line.

And the club’s former technical director, Emenalo, insists Conte is happy with Morata despite failing to sign Lukaku.

“As everybody knows in every walk of life, you develop an idea and you have a policy in mind and you have an intent, and if it doesn’t go the way you want, there is some level of disappointment,” Emenalo told talkSPORT.

“But I can tell you today Conte is extremely happy with Alvaro Morata, and I think that is down to Morata and is also down to the fantastic work they do at Cobham.

“There are no ill feelings now, I think he’s moved on from that and he’s just focused on trying to get through what is a tough schedule and to try and find some rhythm with the team again.”

Despite United sitting one place and three points better off than third-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table, Morata is ahead of Lukaku in the goalscoring charts.

The Spaniard has netted nine league goals and provided four assists, while Lukaku has eight goals and four assists to his name.
