‘What a signing he would have been’ … Chelsea fans react as £45m target shines

Reported summer Chelsea target Riyad Mahrez scored a stunning goal for Leicester City in their 3-2 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday, and Blues fans were quick to have their say on his performance.

The Sun reported on transfer deadline day back in August that the west London outfit were on the verge of signing the Algeria international in a £45m deal, but a move never materialised even though the player was released from international duty.

The 26-year-old has gone on to have an impressive campaign for the Foxes with five goals and five assists in 17 appearances in all competitions, including a brilliant 25-yard strike against the Magpies.

Chelsea supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the winger’s display, and while one said “what a signing he would’ve been”, another has urged the club to “please sign Mahrez next month”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Mahrez wanted a new club before the transfer window was closed but Chelsea wanted a player worth less than £32m so they tried to sign Barkley. Banterous club!

We had the chance to sign Mahrez this summer but we didn't. What a signing he would've been.
