Why David Luiz could be reaching the end of his career at the top level

Chelsea battled to a tight win over Swansea at Stamford Bridge, and in his press conference afterwards a relieved Antonio Conte answered questions about how he thought the team had performed.

When asked about the team overall, he defender their rather turgid performance and tried to be upbeat. But when asked about the fitness of David Luiz he was less positive:

“Now it is very difficult. He had liquid in his knee and we have to assess his recovery on the time, I hope to not lose him for a lot of time and I need to have all my players,” said the manager, as quoted on Football.London.

Andreas Christensen was absolutely superb again in Luiz’ stead so there’s no immediate worry, but it’s a shame to lose the supreme luxury of having the two of them interchange in one spot in the side.

Liquid in his knee doesn’t sound ideal, and after the Brazilian spent the back half of last season strapped up in almost every game, there are worried that maybe the end is approaching for the defender at the very top level. He’s passed his 30th birthday, lost his place in the starting XI to a youngster, and seems to be suffering increasing injury issues. Is his time up at the top level?
