Antonio Conte confirms triple injury blow as Chelsea prepare for Newcastle FA Cup clash

Thibaut Courtois and Alvaro Morata are both expected to miss Chelsea’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Newcastle United tomorrow, Antonio Conte confirmed on Friday.

The Blues are hoping to go one step further in the competition this season after falling at the last hurdle in the previous campaign, losing 2-1 to Arsenal in the final.

Wednesday night saw Chelsea lose by the same scoreline to the same team as the Gunners progressed to the Carabao Cup final at the expense of Conte’s side.

The midweek defeat means the Blues will now have to progress through the FA Cup if they are to earn another trip to Wembley this season in addition to their away trip to face Spurs in the league.

However, they will have to take on the Magpies without goalkeeper Courtois and striker Morata, who have still not recovered in time from their ankle and back injuries respectively to take on Rafael Benitez’s side on Sunday.

Willian also will miss the match having come off with a hamstring injury on Wednesday night, however Cesc Fabregas could be line for a return having trained with the rest of the squad.

“Morata and Courtois are out. I don’t know [how long],” Conte said. “It is very difficult to tell today how many days they need to come back. Morata has a problem in his back and Courtois took a kick in his leg.

“Fabregas trained today with us and tomorrow I will check his physical condition. This is good news for us.

“Willian is out. Today with the doctor took the decision to have a scan on his injury. But I don’t think we are talking about a serious injury.”
