Antonio Conte: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich makes huge sack decision involving players

CHELSEA owner Roman Abramovich will refuse to sack Antonio Conte based on player power, reports suggest.

Conte is facing an uncertain future at Chelsea with the Italian angering club chiefs with his antics both on and off the field.

The Blues’ season has hit a new low in recent times with Bournemouth and Watford both putting them to the sword.

Express Sport understands Chelsea are waiting for the final nail in the coffin before relieving Conte of his managerial duties.

But the Telegraph say any decision made on sacking the 48-year-old will not be based on what the players think.

The attitude of the current Chelsea crop has also been called into question.

Over the years, several managers have paid the ultimate price despite those on the pitch failing to fire.

Andre Villas-Boas was famously axed in 2012 after daring the drop the likes of Frank Lampard and John Terry.

The Portuguese was 33 at the time, the same age as Lampard and Didier Drogba, but his decision to try and phase out the old guard spectacularly backfired.

It was the same with his compatriot Jose Mourinho in 2015.

The 54-year-old had steered them to Premier League title glory the season before, helping pip the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal to the prize.

But Mourinho was sacked with players such as Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa all at odds with him.

The Telegraph say, however, that Abramovich is wiser and surer now.

The Russian supposedly thinks that, with the likes of Terry, Lampard and Drogba now gone, his squad lacks a leader to organise a revolt.

Instead, he will make a decision on Conte based on performances on the pitch.

And he will do so with the advice of director Marina Granovskaia and other members of the board.
